Quartile present teeth related socioeconomic status and oral health behaviors among Korean elderly

Abstract
Objectives :This study is aim to analyze the association of the quartile present teeth with socioeconomic status and oral health behaviors among Korean elderly.

Methods :Data were collected as part of the National Oral Health Survey(NOHS) data in 2006. A two-stage, proportional random sample comprising 1,193 persons aged 65+ years. The number of present teeth were categorized as quartile teeth: from the lowest quartile(Q1) to the highest quartile(Q4). Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to elucidate relationship of the number of teeth to socioeconomic status and oral health behaviors in Q1 and Q4.

Results :There were significant difference in the quartile between those who were edentulous(Q1) and those with 19 to 28 teeth(Q4) of the 75+ and those with 0-8(Q1) and 25-28(Q4) of aged 65-74. Q1 were significantly associated with education level, communication ability, experience the disqualified dentist and frequency of dental visit. When subjects visiting dentist (every) <6 month were used reference group, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) were 2.1(1.1-3.8), 5.7(2.2-15.1) for visiting dental office >5 years aged 65-74 and 76+, respectively.

Conclusion :The finding of this study indicated that people with Q4 had better than those with Q1 teeth in education level, communication ability, inexperience the disqualified dentist and frequency of dental visit. Therefore quartile present teeth was associated with socioeconomic status and oral health behaviors as much as the mean number of present teeth among Korean elderly.
